TERMINOLOGY



CROWN:
The upper part of the diamond, or anything above the girdle.

CROWN ANGLE:
Angle of the crown facets.

CULET: The point or facet on the bottom of the diamond.

CUT:
Not to be confused with the "SHAPE" of the diamond, cut refers to the arrangement of a diamonds facets.

DEPTH:
The diamond height, measured from the table to the culet, usually expressed in millimeters.

DEPTH PERCENTAGE:
This percentage is a measure of the height divided by the width of the diamond.

FACETS:
The flat polished surfaces of a diamond. A round diamond possesses 58 facets, 32 above the girdle and 24 below the girdle.

FLAWLESS:
Diamond without external or internal blemishes or inclusions seen under 10 power magnification.

FLUORESCENCE:
A glow, often blue or gray in color that emanates from some diamonds when hit by ultra - violet light.

INCLUSIONS:
Natural impurities in a diamond which were formed during the crystallization process.

GIRDLE:
The widest circumference of the diamond, meaning the rim around the diamond. The girdle is parallel to the table and is the largest diameter of the diamond. It divides the diamond into its two main sections, the crown and the pavilion. It represents the thin line around the diamond.

PAVILION:
Portion of the diamond that is below the girdle.

PAVILION ANGLE:
Angle of the pavilion facets.

POLISH:
A grade assigned to the diamonds outer finish. How well the polish marks and nicks were removed during cutting process of the diamond.

SHAPE:
Not to be confused with "CUT", shape means the geometric form of the diamond.

SYMMETRY:
A grade assigned to the overall uniformity of the cut of the diamond. The shape of the diamond and the alignment of the facets.

TABLE:
The top facet.

TABLE PERCENTAGE:
The width of the table divided by the diameter of the diamond.
